RE: Urgent Request for Arizona Lawmakers to Call for Amnesty of U.S. Combat Warriors
Calvin Gibbs courageously volunteered to go into harm’s way as an infantryman during the war on terror. He was subsequently deployed to The Maywand District in Afghanistan. To put it into perspective, this was home to the Taliban and every military-age male was expected to join its ranks.
Calvin Gibbs came under fire from one such terrorist and returned fire in defense of his life. For defending himself against a ruthless enemy, he is serving a life sentence in Leavenworth, having been stripped of his constitutional rights to due process. Prosecutors withheld exculpatory evidence that proved SSG Gibbs innocence. The stench of this injustice should disgust every American and, in particular, members of our state legislature and lawmakers in our halls of the U.S. Congress and the Senate.
The Louisiana Republican Party passed a resolution calling for post-war amnesty for our combat warriors, now our nation’s POWs, who are the human fallout and political pawns of the Obama administration’s feckless military policies and unworkable rules of engagement as well as a politicized military justice system while defending our nation against terrorism serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria. There is vast historical precedence for such amnesty following most every major conflict our country has ever fought. It is not an unreasonable ask.
We are asking you to follow Louisiana’s bold stand on this issue and to take leadership in using your connections, power, and influence to demand amnesty as well via passage of a similar resolution and/or passing legislation that calls for such.
Arizona stands with our warriors like SSG Calvin Gibbs, and we urge you to take action immediately on their behalf.
